AGE OF THE REMAKE

In recent years, of all the movies that are released by Hollywood, it seems that very few of them are original. There have been many remakes, new takes and sometimes purely bad copies of film that have been loved as classics. It raises the thought; Does our generation has any originality left at all?

Over the past 15 years, they have been numerous remakes of Classics,. The King and I, became Anna and the Kings, Lee Marvins’s Get Carter role, was reprized by Stallone in a movie of the same name. Gerald Ford’s Ransom , was remade with the same title and starred Mel Gibson. Steve McQueen’s original role as title character of The Thomas Crown affair originally, was reprised by James Bond star Pierce Brosnan , and had cameo appearance from original star Faye Dunaway, the list goes on and on.

The movies that are not remakes are comic book adaptations such as ;Spiderman, Iron Man, the Chris Nolan Batman reboots, Hulk ,the up coming Wolverine Origins movie Graphic novels have leaped from page to screen, in the forms of; Sin City, The Spirit and 300 and the recent are just a few that have been widely received. 80’s children cartoon Transformers has already been successful as live action and Hasbro family member GI Joe awaits cinematic release.

The rest are 21st century takes on already existing film. The recent award winner ‘Rachel getting married’, is a reverse take on ‘28 Days’ (2000) that starred Sandra Bullock, and ‘Eagle Eye’ a hybrid of Will Smiths’ ‘Enemy of the State’ (1998) and Cary Grant’s North by North West (1959) yet another previous Hitchcock original with a 21st century redux starring flavor of the moment, Shia LeBeouf, Disturbia, was an allusion to “Rear Window” ;Let’s not even begin with the romantic comedies.

Reports have it, that “Clash of the Titans” is being remade, and Hilary Duff is to reprise the role once played by Faye Dunaway in a early years take on Bonnie & Clyde. Hilary Duff!!!!Oy Vey.

A lot of television series from the 70’s and 80’s have been taken up by Hollywood. Fans of television 70 ‘s series ‘Starsky & Hutch’ saw it butchered on the big screen as it was turned into a big and not so amusing joke . ‘SWAT’ came and went and ‘Charlie’s Angels’, while well intentioned, was nothing more than eye candy for the boys and girl power seen through the male gaze.

So what next ! What can we expect? A big screen version of ; Dempsey &Makepeace, Jake & the Fat man! Sledge Hammer !or maybe even “The Bold and The Beautiful”. Talks of a big screen version of Dallas have been on and off in recent years, slatting Travolta in the role of JR, formely played by I Dream of Jeanie star Larry Hagman

One that has been long awaited , with bated breath is The A Team, a cult classic ,which still has many hard core loyal fans, more than 20 years after the show aired it’s finale. This is one big screen cross over, that the fans are not going to take lightly if it is not handled with the utmost respect.

In a snowball effect of adaptations and remakes no one knows how far it will go, where it will end or if it will crash. We can only hope that our generation can tap into the creative well of originality, that spawned the classics we so well love, and make something that the generations ahead can appreciate.
